Latest Listen: Kacey Musgraves' "Deeper Into the Well"
Oct 02, 2024I’m so curious - do all of your mornings look the same? I actually really want to know, because I never seem to have the same morning, no matter how much I try to establish routine.
Actually, I’ve tried so many times, and while there are morning activities I like, I never wake up and do the same thing. I think my brain just doesn’t work that way, so I’ve stopped trying to fit myself into the box of “high potential morning routines.”
Like, have you heard of the 5am club?! I’m all for tending to yourself when no one else is awake, and I love to have that feeling of having gotten so much done before 8am, but it RARELY happens - I like my bed too much!
Anyway, I digress. SOME mornings when I don’t jump right into action, I love to sit in my front room with my coffee, and just think and wake up to what I’ve started calling “morning music.”
And if you love that too, I have to share this album with you if it’s not already on your radar; it is perfect for a slow wakeup, and moves you into a nice, moderately paced mid-morning.
Kacey Musgraves’ extended cut of Deeper Well, aptly named Deeper Into the Well, adds 7 new songs to a stellar, but mellow 14 track album - and right off the bat, the tempo picks up.
But first you get 42 minutes of slower paced, mostly acoustic guitar driven tracks with melodies that span moody to uplifting, all of which have a quiet gravity to them.
Be sure to save your meditation ritual for track 6, “Sway” - I can’t be sure, but I can take a pretty well-educated guess that Kacey has achieved - perhaps intentionally - a healing frequency with her harmonies toward the end of the song. A Kacey sound bath, if you will. And it is SO good and relaxing.
The pace picks up by Track 9 with one of my favorites, “Jade Green” (it’s very catchy,) and by the time you reach the bonus tracks, you’ll be ready for a full wake up.
Some of my other favorites that get stuck in my head: “Heart of the Woods,” “Lonely Millionaire,” “Flower Child,” and “Perfection.”
I also have to note “Dinner with Friends,” that reads like a personal “A Few of My Favorite Things” (but with depth and vulnerability), morphs into an ethereal, velvety track by the end - it gave me Michael Kiwanuka vibes the first time I heard it.
And last, but far from least, the easygoing and uplifting collab you never knew you needed, “Superbloom,” featuring one of my absolute faves, Leon Bridges. This song will have you bopping happily while you make yourself breakfast, and get your day moving!
This album has become one of my favorite ways to start the day, whether I’m paying attention, or I just have it on in the background for vibes.
Pop it on your Spotify or Apple Music the next time you have a slow morning, and let me know what you think! And please, tell me about your mornings - my morbid curiosity wants to know how unusual it is that I don’t have a set routine! đ đ¤Ł
